A PARAPLEGIC WOMAN ON MISSION ABILITY BEYOND DISABILITY

ARJUNA AWARDEE DEEPA MALIK:• Motivational Speaker• Currently training for IPC World Athletics Championship France July 2013. She is the only Indian Woman Para-Athlete who has already qualified A-level for the said event up till now.• Member of the working group in the formulation 12th five- year plan { 2012-2017 } on Sports and Physical Education as nominated by the Planning Commission HRD Division on behalf of Sports Ministry.

Details of Previous Work/ Employment:

• ENTERPRENUERSHIP – Ms. Deepa Malik ran a small catering and restaurant business successfully for seven years 2003-2010 {Awarded Swawlamban Award for the effort}. This project was directed towards a social cause as the employees were underprivileged school/college drop-outs from a near-by village. Along with providing a livelihood, Ms. Deepa Malik also ensured that these boys received ample amount of funds to complete their education. As a result, many of these employees went on to receive Bachelors’ and Masters Degrees and undertook various vocational courses. However, the business had to be closed down as Ms. Deepa Malik had to move to Delhi for the training of CWG and Asian Games 2010.

Description of Achievement:

Deepa Malik is the FIRST & ONLY sportswoman to represent the country at International level in her severe category of disability { F-53 }. She has Chest-below paralysis for the last 13 years. Deepa took this as a challenge and started her para-sports career at the age of 36 years, when most sports persons retire. Her sports journey has been tremendous since then. On August 29, 2012 she was presented with the prestigious Arjuna Award at the age of 42 years (oldest athlete to ever receive the award for active sports) by Honorable President, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee. This award represents in a nutshell, all the laurels won by her in her illustrious sports career so far. These achievements are detailed as follows-
